Reader review: Royal Balti House

Andy Walker of Farnworth
17/12/2004

I have eaten at the Royal Balti House Restaurant on three or four occasions, following recommendations from friends and have never been disappointed with any meal I have chosen.

My last visit was to sample the happy hour set menu, which provides several courses for é8.95 (this offer runs from Sunday to Thursday 5pm to 7.30pm). I took my parents and girlfriend as a treat and was astonished at what good value it is.

All the waiters are very friendly and cannot do enough for you. In fact, one of them made a point of acknowledging me from previous visits, although I have only been a handful of times. They treat all customers as special.

The set menu started with two popadoms per person served with mango chutney, raita and red onions. These were deliciously light and all quickly demolished.

Next we had the appetiser course. We selected chicken seekh kebab, onion bhajis, shami kebab and chicken tandoori. These starters were all attractively presented with raita and a salad garnish. All were gobbled up with favourable comments.

For the main course, our chosen selections were chicken jalfrezi, chicken karahi, lamb biryani and chicken balti, accompanied by boiled rice and plain naan bread. Each of the choices was a kaleidoscope of colours and flavours with subtle spices (or not so subtle in the case of the chillies in the jalfrezi!). It was very pleasant to be able to try each of the dishes to expand our repertoire. The portions were generous, so much so that we were unable to finish all of the main courses.

We did, however, leave enough room for some cooling, delicious ice cream. The meal was rounded off with coffee with mints. There was also a complimentary Irish cream liqueur for each diner and a romantic rose for the ladies!

We did not sample the wine menu, but sampled draught Cobra and Kingfisher lager, which were hugely enjoyed as an accompaniment to all the dishes.

All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our excellent value and delicious meal and are going to return imminently to feast again.
