TWO popular Bolton restaurants have won the first Bolton Food and Drink Festival favourite restaurant award.

The Olympic Fish and Chip Restaurant and the Royal Balti House triumphed over 16 other restaurants chosen in the Favourite Festival Restaurant Award competition, which was jointly organised by The Bolton News and Bolton Council's tourism department.

The winning restaurants were chosen by readers of The Bolton News, who were asked to send in a coupon from the paper along with a 50 word description explaining why they voted for their particular restaurant.

Bolton tourism officer Barbara North sifted through more than 2,000 entries and in the end decided that two winners should share the Favourite Festival Restaurant Award.

Tassos Patichis, owner of Olympus, in Bolton town centre, said: "We are delighted with winning this award and we want to thank our customers who nominated us.

"We want to thank in particular our regular customers who have supported us over the years. We will endeavour to keep on producing excellent food and service in the future."

Nurul Islam Meah, owner of the Royal Balti House in Farnworth, said: "I would like to thank all our customers and friends for voting for us.

"We are one of the oldest restaurants in the Bolton area. We took over in 1969.

"We at the Royal Balti House restaurant feel we offer a five-star service to compliment our wonderful food.

"Ninety-five per cent of our customers are regulars and are treated as friends, not customers."

Patricia Bridge, of Salters Court, Atherton, wrote in to praise of The Olympus Fish and Chip Restaurant.

She and her husband have been visiting the restaurant for many years.

She wrote: "The standards never drop and the staff are courteous such as helping clients with taking off and putting on coats.

"They have good old-fashioned manners which have gone out of fashion in recent years but are consistent at the Olympus."

And Jim Harrison, of Garstang Avenue, Bolton, told us of the high standards at The Royal Balti House. He said: "I have visited this restaurant religiously twice a week for 10 years. It offers the best of Bangladeshi cuisine and the head waiter, Anaam, is top class.

"It has a friendly atmosphere and everyone I recommend it to comes back. But don't tell too many people how good it is or we might not get our favourite table when we want it!"

Both winners will share the £100 prize money to be spent in the restaurant they voted for, giving them £50 each. The owners of the restaurants will receive a certificate.
